Random Musings - Day #264

Caught more than glimpse of Shakira's new video for top #5 hit, "she-wolf". She still got the moves.
Been playing "The look" over and over again. Looks like Roxette are re-releasing remastered versions of all their albums next week.

Oh dear, facebook looks to have a flaw and that could allow a trojan. Meanwhile, yahoo have their own problems with a brute-force issue with yahoo mail!

Be careful where you stick your USB in, it may corrupt an entire LAN with conficker

Random Musings - Day #125

The Facebook Experience
I got love it, I was called to look up my mate's facebook page. But I soon discovered that there were other people with the same name as him. One page is a musician. One group page is urging him to come out of the closet! Another one has a description of:

For all people who have met the infamous XXXX and feel that they can now experience life to the fullest after witnessing first hand his ridiculous antics!

The names have been changed to protect the innocent!

Arsenal vs Man Utd
Just like John Higgins in the World Snooker final, it was pretty much over by the first 20 minutes. Disappointing as a neutral.
Reminds me whatever happened to Dean Ashton?

Local Station Office
New feature here. I am monitoring if the local rail station office is closed. Today it was closed.

Random Musings - Day #85

Tomcat Hardening
Well there are some guides on how to harden your configuration for tomcat. Usually it's common sense, remove unnecessary files, ensure you set standard error messages and set your OS privileges for your service to be as low as possible. A general security guide focusing on authentication can be found at cafesoft. Whilst, there is an OWASP guide provides some pointers but I stress this is not the definitive guide. The apache wiki has a few discussion points. There is also a security how-to.

Government sniffing facebook
It's interesting to hear that the UK government want to monitor communications on facebook. That's no mean task at all. That's excluding the privacy issues associated with it. Here's some thoughts from blogsecurity and the privacy guy

Pensions
MyFinances discuss why people are saving for a pension. I remember a finance colleague I used to work with, say I am not saving for pension, there's no point. With the credit crunch, no-one is really immune from going belly-up. I am not clear how well protected you are if an event like that. Here's a financial crisis article which actually leaving more questions rather than giving any answers.

Random Musings - Day #61

Excel
Microsoft finally fix Excel after some Trojan Horse have been attacking a particular vulnerability.

Facebook Issues
All kind of reports about Facebook have been coming out. You can gain a lot of details from facebook groups and friends. Because of trust that inherit. A psychologist says, "get off facebook and get a life" and also a girl got fired for calling her job boring.

EULA
What happens if a cat clicks on an agreement.

Vimto
Looks like the Police are getting desperate in that they are now stealing vimto.

Private calls
You can spoof and make your calls truly private according to spoofcard. Conversely, you could unmask blocked calls

Listening
Hmm Listening is everything, particularly when it is active.

Facestalking

I picked up this thing about facestalking. You can view other people's pictures and see what they are up to. However, you do need add friends to this. Or do you? It looks like that you can view other people's profiles without friending them. If you go in 'privacy' and then 'poke, message and friend request', you can see who can see your profile.

I'd be very careful who you friend as this man found out the hard way.

So much so, it looks some workplaces are barring them.

Facebook can used against you

It was reported that the university authorities are using facebook to throw the book at students at Oxford University. The student union are urging students to tighten their security settings so that not much details can be viewed.

Have a look at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/6902333.stm

Also in a news article, I saw these interesting facts:
*
* A survey of 600 British companies showed that 1 in 5 had logged on to Facebook and similar websites to vet potential workers.
* Five students were banned from a school trip in Toronto after disparaging remarks about teachers were found on Facebook.
* A US consultancy rejected an applicant after reading that is interest included "smokin' blunts with the homies"

To be fair, I've started using facebook to catch up on old friends. But trying to keep myself as anonymous as possible. If you can call it that. But I am beginning to find already, it's not what *you* put on facebook that could give information leakage. It's what other people put in their facebooks about you. e.g. photos, etc.
But as I say to myself. There's enough information out there about me to paint a picture. But nothing substantial.
